Contoribution to the Regional Training Course at University of Sharjah, UAE

NEL contributed to the Regional Training Course on Pressurized Water Reactor Technology Using PC Based Basic Principle and GlassTop Plant Simulaters hosted by the Department of Nuclear Engineering, University of Sharjah, United Arab Emirates.  As one of the lectures, Dr. Masahiro Tatsumi of NEL paritipated in the training course and gave two series of lectures using the MicroPhysics Simulator Lite and GRAPE. 

Using visualization capability of the MicroPhysics Simulator Lite, behabiors of the core in depletion and accident conditions were explained and discussed in detail from the viewpoint of physical phenomena. Importance of negative feedback by the Doppler Effect of U-238 was emphasized to realize inherent safety of NPPs.


GRAPE was configured as an analysis platform for a 4-loop Westinghouse-type generic PWR plant in the training course. It was used for analyses in normal and transient/accident conditions.  The concept of the “turbine-lead” control of PWR system was explained through a excrise using GRAPE.  The reasons how the system behaves in the events were explored using intuitive and easy-to-use visualization capability of GRAPE. Despite lack of time, students could perform several cases of analysis including sensitivity study in LOCA accidents to understand the physical phenomena in the events.
